A simple, flavorful homemade fire cider tonic made with apple cider vinegar, horseradish, ginger, turmeric, garlic, and honey to boost immunity during cold and flu season.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (480 ml) raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup fresh horseradish root, peeled and finely grated
  • 1/4 cup fresh ginger root, peeled and minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh turmeric root, peeled and grated (or ground turmeric as substitute)
  • 6 large garlic cloves, peeled and smashed
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) raw honey (or maple syrup/agave for vegan option)
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Optional: splash of water to mellow vinegar

Instructions

  1. Peel and finely grate the horseradish, ginger, and turmeric. Smash the garlic cloves and finely chop the onion. This prep takes about 15 minutes.
  2. Place the grated roots, garlic, onion, and cayenne pepper into a wide-mouth quart (1-liter) glass jar.
  3. Pour 2 cups (480 ml) of apple cider vinegar over the ingredients until fully covered. Add up to 1/4 cup (60 ml) water if vinegar is too strong.
  4. Seal the jar tightly and shake well to mix. Label with the date and store in a cool, dark place for 4 to 6 weeks.
  5. Shake the jar every few days to mix ingredients and release flavors.
  6. After 4 to 6 weeks, strain the solids through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a clean jar or bottle, pressing to extract all liquid.
  7. Stir in 1/4 cup (60 ml) raw honey to taste to balance sharpness and add sweetness.
  8. Store the fire cider refrigerated for up to 6 months. Take 1 to 2 tablespoons daily as an immunity booster.

Notes

Use raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar with the ‘mother’ for best benefits. Shake jar every few days during steeping. Avoid metal lids for long storage; use plastic-lined lids or glass bottles with plastic caps. Adjust horseradish and cayenne amounts for heat tolerance. Strain gently to avoid bitterness. Can substitute honey with maple syrup or agave for vegan version. Store refrigerated after straining and use within 6 months.
