These savory smoked sausage pinwheels with spicy mustard are the ultimate game day appetizer. Flaky crescent dough is filled with smoky sausage, creamy mustard spread, and sharp cheddar cheese for a quick and crowd-pleasing snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (12-14 ounce) package of smoked sausage (like Hillshire Farm)
  • 1 (8 ounce) can of refrigerated crescent roll dough (like Pillsbury)
  • 4 ounces of cream cheese, softened
  • 3 tablespoons of spicy brown mustard (like Gulden’s)
  • 1 cup of shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon of everything bagel seasoning (optional but highly recommended)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Make the spicy mustard spread. In a small bowl, combine the softened cream cheese and spicy brown mustard. Mix until smooth and well combined. Set aside.
  3. Prepare the sausage. Slice the smoked sausage lengthwise into four long planks, about ¼-inch thick.
  4. Roll out the dough. Unroll the crescent dough onto a clean cutting board. If using perforated dough, press the seams together to create one solid rectangle. Gently stretch the dough into a slightly larger rectangle, about 10×14 inches.
  5. Spread the mustard cream cheese mixture evenly over the entire surface of the dough, leaving a ½-inch border on one of the long edges.
  6. Lay the sausage planks lengthwise across the dough, spacing them evenly. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the sausage and dough.
  7. Starting from the long edge opposite the border, carefully roll the dough into a tight log. Use the border to seal the edge. Pinch the seam gently to close.
  8. Using a sharp knife, slice the log into 12-16 even pieces. Place the pinwheels on the prepared baking sheet, cut-side up, leaving a little space between each one.
  9. In a small bowl, beat the egg with a tablespoon of water. Brush the tops of the pinwheels with the egg wash. Sprinkle generously with everything bagel seasoning, if using.
  10. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the pinwheels are golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
  11. Let the pinwheels cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a serving platter. Serve warm with extra spicy mustard for dipping.

Notes

For cleaner slices, chill the rolled log in the freezer for 10-15 minutes before slicing. Don’t overfill the dough to prevent bursting. Use a sharp serrated knife for best results.
