A quick and easy hot cocoa charcuterie board perfect for cozy nights and casual gatherings, featuring a velvety cocoa base and an artful arrangement of mix-ins for a comforting and indulgent experience.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups whole milk (or dairy-free alternative like oat milk)
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Mini marshmallows (classic or flavored)
  • Chocolate chunks or chips (dark, milk, or white chocolate)
  • Crushed peppermint candies or candy canes
  • Toasted almonds or hazelnuts
  • Biscotti or graham crackers
  • Cinnamon sticks (optional)
  • Whipped cream (optional)
  • Caramel drizzle or chocolate syrup (optional)
  • Fresh berries (optional, for summer twist)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine 2 cups (480 ml) of milk, 1/4 cup (25 g) unsweetened cocoa powder, and 1/4 cup (50 g) granulated sugar. Whisk together over medium heat until the mixture is smooth and warm but not boiling—about 5 minutes.
  2. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Keep warm on low heat while you prepare the board.
  3. On your serving board, place small bowls or ramekins for mini marshmallows, chocolate chunks, and crushed peppermint candies.
  4. Scatter toasted almonds or hazelnuts in small piles around the board to add crunch and visual interest.
  5. Place biscotti, graham crackers, or any other crunchy cookies along one side of the board. Break some biscotti into smaller pieces for easier dipping.
  6. Add a small bowl of whipped cream and a drizzle bottle of caramel or chocolate syrup if desired.
  7. Lay a few cinnamon sticks across the board for stirring and aroma.
  8. Add a handful of fresh berries if in season, or sprinkle a tiny bit of flaky sea salt over the chocolate chunks for extra flavor.
  9. Pour hot cocoa into mugs or heatproof glasses.
  10. Encourage everyone to customize their drink with the toppings and mix-ins.

Notes

Heat milk gently to avoid scorching. Whisk cocoa powder and sugar before adding milk to prevent lumps. Toast nuts lightly for aroma. Use fresh marshmallows and good-quality chocolate chunks. Prepare toppings while cocoa warms to save time. Store cocoa base warm in a thermos or slow cooker if making ahead. Add marshmallows just before serving to prevent melting.
