Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large sweet potatoes (about 3 pounds or 1.4 kg)
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter (75 g), melted
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (100 g), packed
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1/3 cup whole milk (80 ml)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup pecans (120 g), chopped
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (60 g)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (100 g), packed
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (60 g), cold and cut into small cubes
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil. Wash sweet potatoes and pierce each several times with a fork.
  2. Roast sweet potatoes for 45-60 minutes until tender. Let cool for 15 minutes.
  3. Reduce oven temperature to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  4. Scoop sweet potato flesh into a large bowl. Add melted butter, brown sugar, eggs, milk, vanilla, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Beat with a hand mixer until smooth and creamy.
  5. In a medium bowl, combine chopped pecans, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Cut in cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some larger pecan clusters.
  6. Spread sweet potato mixture evenly in prepared dish. Sprinkle crumble topping evenly over the top.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes until topping is golden brown and filling is set around edges but slightly jiggly in center. Tent with foil if browning too quickly.
  8. Let rest for at least 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Roast sweet potatoes instead of boiling for deeper flavor. Use cold butter for the crumble to ensure a crunchy texture. Toast pecans before using for maximum nuttiness. The casserole can be assembled a day ahead and refrigerated; add 10-15 minutes to baking time if starting cold.
