A quick and easy snack featuring flaky puff pastry wrapped around spicy jalapeño cheese and mini sausages, perfect for parties or casual gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 sheets frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 24 mini sausages (about 14 oz / 400 g)
  • 2 medium jalapeño peppers, finely sliced (seeds removed for milder heat)
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded (4 oz / 115 g)
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened (115 g)
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 large egg beaten with 1 tbsp water (egg wash)
  • Optional: 1/4 tsp smoked paprika
  • Optional: fresh cilantro or chives for garnish

Instructions

  1. Thaw the frozen puff pastry sheets according to package instructions, about 40 minutes at room temperature. Lightly flour your workspace and gently unfold each sheet.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine softened cream cheese, shredded sharp cheddar, garlic powder, onion powder, and smoked paprika if using. Stir until smooth and evenly mixed.
  3. Wash and thinly slice the jalapeños. Remove seeds for less heat if desired. Pat mini sausages dry if needed.
  4. Cut each puff pastry sheet into 12 equal strips (approximately 3×4 inches). Spread a thin layer of the cheese mixture onto each strip, sprinkle a few jalapeño slices over the cheese, place one mini sausage on the edge, then roll up the pastry around the sausage, pressing edges gently to seal.
  5. Brush each rolled pastry with the beaten egg and water mixture for a glossy finish.
  6. Arrange the pigs in a blanket on a rimmed baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving space between each. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 15-18 minutes until puffed and golden brown.
  7. Transfer baked snacks to a cooling rack for a few minutes to avoid sogginess. Serve warm with dipping sauces like spicy mustard, ranch, or barbecue sauce.

Notes

Keep puff pastry cold before baking for best flakiness. Use a thin layer of cheese mixture to prevent leaking. Remove jalapeño seeds to reduce heat. If pastry browns too quickly, cover loosely with foil halfway through baking. For gluten-free, use gluten-free puff pastry. For dairy-free, substitute cream cheese and cheddar with vegan alternatives.
