Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds (900g) chicken wings, separated into drumettes and flats
  • 1/4 cup (85g) pure honey
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) barbecue sauce (recommend smoky, slightly spicy brand like Sweet Baby Ray’s)
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) soy sauce (use tamari for gluten-free option)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) olive oil or vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons (20g) toasted sesame seeds
  • Optional: pinch of cayenne pepper for heat
  • Optional: chopped fresh green onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil and set a wire rack on top.
  2. Pat chicken wings dry with paper towels and place in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Drizzle olive oil over wings. Sprinkle salt, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and black pepper. Toss well to coat evenly.
  4. Arrange wings in a single layer on the wire rack, ensuring they are not touching.
  5. Bake wings for 35-40 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy. Internal temperature should reach 165°F (75°C).
  6. While wings bake, combine honey, barbecue sauce, and soy sauce in a bowl and stir until smooth.
  7. Toast sesame seeds in a dry skillet over medium heat for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly until golden and fragrant. Remove from heat to cool.
  8. Transfer cooked wings to a large bowl. Pour honey BBQ sauce over wings and toss gently to coat evenly.
  9. Arrange glazed wings on a platter, sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds, and garnish with chopped green onions if desired. Serve immediately.

Notes

Pat wings dry before seasoning to ensure crispiness. Use a wire rack for even cooking and crisp skin. Toast sesame seeds carefully to avoid burning. Toss wings in sauce just before serving to keep them crispy. Reserve some sauce to brush on after plating for extra stickiness. Can be cooked in an air fryer at 400°F (200°C) for 20-25 minutes as an alternative method.
