  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt to taste (start with 1/2 teaspoon)
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped chives or fresh parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Peel and slice 3 large yellow onions thinly (about 1/8 inch or 3 mm thick).
  2. Place 2 tablespoons unsalted butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat and let it melt gently without browning.
  3. Add the sliced onions to the pan, stir to coat them in butter, and spread evenly.
  4. Cook onions over medium-low heat, stirring every 5 minutes, for 30-40 minutes until deep golden brown, very soft, and sweet-smelling.
  5. When onions are almost done, sprinkle 1 teaspoon salt and a pinch of black pepper, stirring well.
  6. Transfer caramelized onions to a bowl and let cool to room temperature.
  7. In a medium bowl, combine 1 cup sour cream, 1/2 cup mayonnaise, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon onion powder, and 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce; stir until smooth.
  8. Fold cooled caramelized onions into the sour cream mixture until evenly distributed.
  9. Taste and adjust seasoning with more salt or pepper if needed.
  10. Cover and refrigerate the dip for at least 1 hour before serving to allow flavors to meld.
  11. Garnish with chopped chives or parsley if desired and serve with chips, veggies, or crackers.

Notes

Use medium-low heat to caramelize onions slowly for best sweetness. Cool onions completely before mixing to avoid watery dip. Chill dip for at least 1 hour for best flavor.
